Chapter 33
Chapter 33
The Transient Realm (3.3)
Just as Zheng Wan’s mind was spinning with countless stories of the supernatural, a cold voice came into her ears. It was Cui Wang. She instinctively closed her eyes——
One breath.
Two breaths.
Three breaths.
When she counted to ten, the cool scent of pei-lan enveloped her once again. “It’s done.”
Zheng Wan opened her eyes; the faceless monster had disappeared.
There was a messy pile of rags on the ground, looking as if they had been slashed by a flurry of strokes with a sharp blade.
“Where’s the faceless monster?”
Cui Wang’s complexion wasn’t very good. “That was not the real body.”
He looked towards the chasm, “It seems that to get out of this realm, we have to cross this.”
Zheng Wan’s heart leapt; the faceless monster had said very clearly just now, the rule of this ‘Flying Bird Crossing’ was: “one person can cross, but two people will die”—what could they do?
If she was Cui Wang, she would not feel an ounce of guilt at abandoning someone who had once flogged and humiliated her.
“Mister Cui……”
Zheng Wan looked up. “You should go.”
Cui Wang didn’t expect this from her. He was silent, then softened his tone:
“You don’t want to?”
“I do.”
Zheng Wan nodded honestly. “But if I use the crossing, Mister Cui will not be able to. Wan’niang– Wan’niang only wishes for Mister Cui to always be safe, and live a long and peaceful life.
“But if Mister Cui manages to get out, can you spare the Zheng family?”
She wanted to grab his sleeve, “Father and I did offend Mister Cui once, but we have repented. M-Mister Cui, spare my father and mother… alright?”
Cui Wang glanced down at her.
The little lady’s head was tilted towards him, small and round. Her fair face was smudged with dust and grime from the tunnel, making her look rather wretched, but her tearful eyes were brighter and purer than ever before.
Under Cui Wang’s gaze, Zheng Wan’s heart gradually sank.
She was prepared for the worst-case scenario. Even if he really abandoned her here, going by Cui Wang’s character, he would look after the Zheng family after getting out because she had taken the initiative to give up——
This was still better than the ending of the book.
On the other hand, there was a better outcome that she was still fighting for. The book had said, the young Sword Sovereign moved about alone, aloof and cold. He disliked being entangled with or indebted to others.
His refusal to teach her, was an example.
Presently, she was taking the initiative to give up and give him the chance to live. Would this memory become a kind of psychological barrier to him in future?
Zheng Wan guessed that with Cui Wang’s pride, he would not want to be indebted to her, so it was more likely that he would find a way to take her with him. The protagonist always acts reputably.
Even though she had thought it through thoroughly, when it was actually happening, she couldn’t help becoming afraid.
“We will go together.”
Cui Wang retracted his gaze and fastened the other end of the white silk to his waist. When he turned back, he saw Zheng Wan staring at him dumbfoundedly with her mouth slightly open. “Come here.”
Zheng Wan went over nervously.
She wasn’t expecting that with one swift movement, she would be tied to his back, their skin pressed against each other. Zheng Wan’s face flushed instantly, “M-Mister Cui, you…”
“I can’t care about such things now.”
Cui Wang turned back; the beautiful jade-like face was just inches away. Even this close, there was not a single blemish to be found. Dark eyes framed with dark, well-defined brows, it was truly… moving.
Zheng Wan pressed her boiling red face to his back. “Mister Cui, are we going over like this?”
“Well, flying is obviously impossible.”
Cui Wang walked to the edge of the cliff. “We’ll try to go over from the bottom of the cliff.”
“If I were someone else, would Mister Cui do this too?”
Zheng Wan didn’t know why she would ask such a meaningless question, as if she had lost her mind, but her arms automatically wrapped around his neck after she spoke.
The mountain breeze passed over them. The only answer she got from Cui Wang was, “Hold tight.”
And then, the feeling of weightlessness seized her.
