Legacy of the Dark Sage

Chapter 194 Finding Clues

Kyran chose the room opposite Cyneah’s. It was the same room where he, Nolan and Zephyr had talked as well. He chose this room because it was at the far end and most of the rooms near the stairs were occupied. He also did not want to be disturbed by people going up and down the stairs.

As Kyran stood in front of the room, he glanced at the door to Cyneah’s room.

Zephyr, standing behind him, saw this and immediately sighed in his heart. His master worried too much about his woman.

“She is still sleeping. You don’t have to worry,” Zephyr told Kyran after hearing Cyneah’s even breathing inside the room.

Normal people would not be able to hear it, but Zephyr was originally a Quilin, and his sense of hearing was by default strong.

Kyran’s brow twitched as he turned to look at Zephyr. He did not need the ability to read minds to know what this Quilin was thinking right now. But he was too tired explaining himself and just said, “You can stay in the room beside mine. Try to think about what I said earlier.”

During the talk they had earlier, they also talked about improving the array of the shrine in the Shaiha Ruins. Nolan suggested having it improved after Kyran finished his ‘training’. Zephyr was not happy when he heard it, so Kyran suggested having Zephyr think about Nolan’s suggestion. Either way, Kyran would respect his decision.

Remembering about it made Zephyr frown. He understood why Nolan suggested postponing improving the shrine’s array. Nolan said the training Kyran would undergo could improve his overall foundation. It meant his Combat and Magic knowledge would improve, and so would his Array knowledge. As to how it would happen, Nolan could not provide the details and only confirmed that he and Cade, Kyran’s father, improved their Array knowledge because of the training.𝒩𝒐𝑽𝓮𝔩𝔫𝖊xt.𝐂𝒐𝔪

Once Kyran finished his training, his chances to decipher and improve the shrine’s array would be higher. There was also the possibility that he could upgrade the whole array.

The only reason for Zephyr’s hesitation was because he was worried those people from the Templar Code would do something drastic to the shrine while Kyran was still in training. Right now, Zephyr sensed that the Shaiha was still safe but was unsure for how long.

“I will,” Zephyr replied, sounding a little hesitant.

“It’s Nolan’s idea and we both know why he wanted me to train first. But even without training, I can improve the shrine’s array.” Kyran told him.

It was not conceit that prompted these words from Kyran. It was a resolve he held in his heart. Resolve never to think he could not accomplish what he had set out to do for a second. Only by thinking this way could he also feel assured about his situation.

Kyran also did not want to force Zephyr in agreeing because he understood Zephyr’s worries. It was for this reason that he let Zephyr have the final say.

“If you decided to have the array improved first, we’ll go there after my core is healed.” Kyran added.

Zephyr nodded, “Alright. I’ll think about it.”

After saying his piece, he entered the room beside Kyran’s.

Kyran also entered his room.

Inside, he did not sleep at once. He first took out all the storage space he got from the bandits and the three people of the Royal Army’s Special Ops.

Because things happened one after another, Kyran had no time to check everything. Now that he had some time, he planned to sort everything. Who knew? He might find some valuable items that he could use.

The items from the bandits were silver and gold coins, low-grade spirit stones, potions, pills, and some common medicinal herbs and weapons. He placed each item on different space storage. Most of the herbs he planned to leave to Anette for safekeeping. He only planned to take some, which he could use for array creation. As for the weapons, they were useless to Kyran, but maybe he could reheat them and shape them into items or even weapons he could use.

When Kyran was finished sorting the spoils from the bandits, he sorted the ones from the Special Ops.

Their space storage was of mid-grade, and normally, no one would be able to look inside. But since they were dead, their magic sense had already left the space storage, allowing others to inspect it.

Similar to the bandits, the Special Ops space storage had coins, spirit stones, potions and pills. However, the difference, the spirit stones, potions, and pills were of mid to high-grade levels. Though there were fewer high-grade spirit stones, only amounting to four thousand eighty-seven in total, it was still a lot. Same with the potions. But the potions were mostly magic energy replenishing, healing and other physical and magical boosters. As for the pills, there were some Kyran was not familiar with, so he placed them in separate space storage and had Anette check them tomorrow.

Kyran also found a few magic devices and items, and in order to check how they worked, he had to use his magic energy to operate them. He did not do it, though, in case these devices had a way to transmit his magic signature once he inserted some of his magic energy. Who knew, these devices and items might also have a detection ability when activated.

‘I’ll have Nolan check them tomorrow,’ Kyran decided and placed everything in separate space storage. He continued to check the space storage, and he soon found a black disc that lit up upon contact, and a series of information was transmitted in his head.

Kyran’s eyes widened as he realized the information was about him. More accurately, it contained all information of every data and movement the Royal Army had done to capture him. After a few minutes, he came across a report on a failed operation where the army attempted to break the Regis Estate’s Inner Wall Defensive Array.

All the emotions Kyran had suppressed for the past few weeks came crashing down on him the moment he read why the operation had failed. The report only had two lines: ‘Lord Cade, the next Regis Patriarch, intercepted the team’s advance. Operation had failed.’

Kyran’s hand tightened around the black disc. With elbows resting on his knees, he hunched forward and brought his clenched hands, holding the disc on his forehead as if in prayer. He closed his eyes and said in an almost inaudible voice, “Father… He’s okay. The estate is also safe… that’s good.”

The night Kyran met Nolan, he said his father was strong. He also assured him his clan would not be defeated that easily. Kyran did not doubt that. However, it did not stop him from worrying.

Taking a deep breath, Kyran continued to read through the report. After reading that a group of army officers had successfully entered the Regis Inner Wall, he furrowed his brows.

Kyra stood up at once and wanted to talk to Nolan about it. He needed to find a way to inform his clan.

But he paused at once after reading a line near the end of the report. It said: ‘Unable to establish contact within the walls.’

Kyran sat back and pondered for a bit. The report had been made almost a week ago, and the only update was given a few days ago, which said they were still looking for a way to contact their men.

Doubts circled in his mind as he continued reading the report. When he was done, he browsed the rest of the reports about him and could not shake off the feeling that something was amiss.

The first doubt Kyran had was how his father or clan could make such an amateur mistake to miss those people from the army entering the Inner Wall. Now that he had a better knowledge of Arrays, he knew that arrays created by a specialist had a certain link to his creation. It was how they would know if their array had been breached or was damaged. It also let them know the extent of the damage inflicted on the array. From that, they would adjust accordingly to minimize further damage.

Kyran guessed that his father controlled the Inner Wall’s defensive array. Because he witnessed how his father’s eyes glowed, and soon the defensive array activated the night the army raided them.

So would his father miss people passing through his array?

The second doubt Kyran had, was the army’s ignorance about this fact. Did they not have an array specialist that would tell them about this feature?

Noir told Kyran that he was ‘valued’ by a lot of people because of his Array attainments. Because few could be called an Array Specialist, but would the army lack an Array Specialist?

Kyran remembered how complex the damnable woman’s array had used back in Hanaan. And it was amplified by using her magic device. Based on what Nolan explained, it was an item created by the army’s Research Division.

Then it meant the army did not lack any Array specialists. So why did they not ask the Research Division’s opinion?

It was Kyran’s third doubt. He already sensed that something was off when he found that only low-ranked army officers were dispatched to deal with him and his family.

‘The distribution of power within the army…’ He pondered some more.

Half an hour later, Kyran came up with a few conclusions. He did not look for Nolan to discuss it. He would do that tomorrow.

After coming to this decision, Kyran continued searching the space storage in case there were other items like the black disc.

Unfortunately, there was only one. Kyran did not mind. For now, it was enough.

‘I’ll have Byron look into it,’ he thought and hid the black disc inside his pouch.
