Chapter 1015: What One Must Do
Whoosh!
Passing through the rift, Valyr immediately squinted his eyes as he stepped on the dried-up corpse of the Greater Tidemother.
Seeing the sun high up in the sky, he then opened up his status screen, only to find out that an entire day had passed while he’d been brought into the Alltide’s private subspace.
Pondering over what he should do next, Valyr’s train of thought was shortly interrupted as Vaughn’s words echoed out from the other side of the rift. “I guess this is where we part ways.”
“Then again, if you need my help, you could always use the talisman to contact me.”
Nodding in response to the man’s words, Valyr went silent for a bit before asking, “Are you gonna head back to the temporal realm since I now have a worse mark on my back?”
“It seems so,” replied Vaughn with a wry smile. “With it now being a Tier III mark, I don’t know how long it’ll take me to create the solution for the curse. All I can tell you at this point is that I’ll eventually complete it.”
“Still better than telling me there’s no hope,” said Valyr in response, which elicited laughter to erupt from Vaughn.
“That’s true.” Vaughn nodded in agreement, only for his eyes to slightly widen as he gave a knowing smile to the young man. “Now that I think about it, I have a feeling that it’ll take me less time to make it than I initially thought.”
Though Valyr was curious as to what Vaughn meant by that, the latter did not give him the time to figure it out as Vaughn began to close the rift.
“Don’t forget to ascend to the next class rank,” said Vaughn before the rift fully closed. “In fact, even ascending to the peak of mortality isn’t a problem with the amount of feats you’ve achieved.”
“Anyways, talk to you later.”
Swoosh!
Watching as the rift disappeared before his very eyes, Valyr blankly stared at the spot where the rift once was before sitting down on the massive corpse of the Greater Tidemother.
Ding!
Just as he had regained the train of thought he’d lost due to Vaughn’s interruption earlier, a notification sound came from the system, causing him to wonder whether the entire world was conspiring against him to not let him mull over things.
Though, once he took a look at the notifications he received, his thoughts regarding the world’s malicious intent had immediately taken a 180 degree shift, smiling as he decided to make his way back to Astarto.
[The Alltide has attempted to activate the tracking feature on your Mark of the Alltide (Tier III).]
[Due to your actions, you have successfully corrupted a part of the functions of the Mark of the Alltide (Tier III).]
[The Mark of the Alltide (Tier III) has failed to give a response back to the Alltide.]
[Your Mark of the Alltide (Tier III) has changed to Partial Mark of the Alltide (Tier III).] “…I guess it wasn’t all that bad.”
…
Unsurprisingly, once Valyr had shown his face within the town, almost all of the citizens of Astarto cheered and thanked the young man for helping them defend against the monster tide.
Recalling how he’d taken care of the eighth and ninth wave of the tide by himself, many of them talked about how he was the Tidebreaker that would protect their town from every emergency.
In fact, some of them had even begun to attach the word ‘eternal’ to the beginning of the title, stating that Valyr would protect Astarto for as long as he lived.
Feeling a mix of annoyance and happiness at the abrupt change to his title, Valyr watched as the entire town got into a festive mood once more due to his presence, causing him to let out a faint sigh as he eventually made his way to the town hall.
Once there, the young man felt a slight headache after seeing many of the people there intent on bringing up his title of Tidebreaker yet again.
Fortunately, the situation was averted after Alfaera came to greet him, soon bringing him to her office as she initiated the conversation. “Tristan told me you went somewhere after the tide was done yesterday.”
‘He did?’ Though he was inwardly surprised by Alfaera’s words, the gears in his mind swiftly got to work as Valyr nodded in response.
“Yeah, sorry. The kingdom told me to head back for a bit because something urgent popped up.”
“Does it something have to do with the war?” asked Alfaera, her expression serious.
Seeing that Valyr nodded to her question, the woman knew it was wise to not delve into the topic further, instead grinning as she asked him, “So, what brought you back to Astarto?” Noticing that Alfaera had sent a message to Tristan, a faint smile crept up onto Valyr’s lips as he replied, “Well, I did tell Tristan and a couple other people that I’d stay here to catch up with them.”
“Since I abruptly had to go somewhere yesterday, I decided to make up for it by staying here for some time.”
At those words, Alfaera let out a bit of laughter. “Actually, I told Tristan that you’d make up for it after he told me that. He didn’t believe it.”
Hearing that, Valyr let out laughter himself as the two continued to talk about Astarto and the various things that happened to the town while he was away.
Eventually, Tristan had arrived at the town hall, causing the conversation to last longer as the three seemingly took the time to fully catch up with what they were doing.
“Oh yeah.” At some point in their conversation, Tristan looked at Valyr in the eye as his expression became serious. “Damian approached me yesterday to send you a message.”
Seeing as Alfaera’s expression turned serious at those words, the young man had a look of slight suspicion on his face as he asked, “What did he say?”
“He told me that you should talk with him at the barracks,” said Tristan in response, causing the suspicion on Valyr’s face to somewhat deepen.
Understanding what Valyr’s look meant, the man continued, “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have any malicious intent towards you. His personality may have changed, but he still looks out for
the town.”
“But I am curious on what he wants to talk with you about.” Tristan slightly shrugged. “So, are you gonna head to the barracks now?”
“Do I need to go to the barracks now?” asked Valyr in response, to which Tristan slightly shook his head.
Seeing that, Valyr replied, “Then, I’ll stay in the town hall for the meantime and get some
rest.”
Asking Alfaera if he could stay in one of the town hall’s guest rooms again, the gears in Valyr’s mind continued spinning as he finally finished the train of thought he had earlier.
With Vaughn’s words acting as his compass of sorts, he knew what he had to do first before
heading to meet Damian.
And that was… to ascend to Rank 4.
