He nodded lightly. “Don’t do these things in the future. Leave them all to me.”
“What am I supposed to do then?”
“You can stand by the beach and enjoy the breeze. Go look at the scenery.”
“…” She smiled. Any other man would have been overjoyed to have her help at a time like this. Yet, he could not bear to make her work. “I’ll fall ill if I’m too free. I’ll do the easier chores.”
He took in her sunburnt, reddened cheeks with heartache. “Don’t do any chores. Be obedient.”
She did not argue with him.
He spoke up in discomfort. “Do you know how worried I was when I returned to see that you weren’t there?”
She fell silent. He had found her when she was still a distance away from the shed. He had to have spent a long time looking for her. “I’m sorry. I got too excited at the sight of so much food that I forgot about the time.”
“I’ve made you suffer.” Bai Qinghao thought of their current circumstances and could only sigh helplessly.
It seemed like they could not rely on a passing boat. After resting for a few more days, they would have to come up with ways to leave this place themselves.
The two of them returned to their shed. Fang Xinxin saw that there were two large piles of fire food there as well as two wild chickens.
“Wow, chickens!” She said happily, “This will last us days.”
“My wife, look at this!” Bai Qinghao brought a basket out from behind the pile of firewood and handed it to her.
She saw that the basket was filled with green mangoes. Her eyes lit up with surprise. “These are mangoes!”
She immediately picked one up and peeled off its skin to bite into it.
It was a pity that the mangoes here were sour and hard. They were not ripe yet and tasted very bad. Still, she ate it all without wasting any.
She was overjoyed that they had fruits to eat. Only God knew how much she missed the taste of fruits.
Bai Qinghao was upset by this. “My wife, I’ve really made you suffer.”
She did not mind it though. “It’s enough that we don’t have to starve on an island like this.”
After her first life, she had decided she would take things as they came here.
As long as they were happily in love, there was nothing worth being upset over.
Bai Qinghao placed the basket down and picked up a sea snake. He skinned it and sliced it’s meat into long strips. He then placed the pieces on a large leaf and made skewers with tree branches.
He then retrieved the fire tinders and started another fire.
The two of them had a delicious meal of barbecued sea snakes.
The scent of barbequed sea snakes filled the air. Fang Xinxin drizzled the meat with some fresh mango juice. This way, the meat was seasoned with a sour and sweet taste.
After their meal, they began to busy themselves again.
Bai Qinghao took the surgical knife from Fang Xinxin. Although they had shared a meal, the basket remained filled to the brim. He visited the beach nearby and skinned all the remaining sea snakes. He then sliced the meat up.
He made a simple rack with wood and hung the meat up with grass. This way, the meat they could not finish in time would air dry.
This would prevent the meat from spoiling.
Fang Xinxin was also busy. She sliced up all the fish and removed their guts.
The larger fishes could be barbecued while the smaller ones could be used to make soup.
The fish’s guts were very bitter. Thus, she needed to remove all of them.
Due to the hot weather, the fish would begin spoiling in a matter of hours.
Thus, she similarly hung all the clean fish up to dry.
It was a pity that they didn’t have any salt. Otherwise, fermenting these meat with salt would make them taste much better.
They also did not have any salt for the snake meat they were putting to dry..
