Chapter 1622: Treat Yourself
Chapter 1622: Treat Yourself
Ning waited with Shara for a few minutes before two people came running out of the door. One of them was an older man with gray hair, wearing a golden necklace. The other was a shorter, but younger man with a bald head.
The bald man immediately looked around, doing something.
“Is that the girl?” the older man asked.
“Yes,” the woman said. “She has powers, but can’t interact with Spirits. When Frank tried to
go into her to test if she is an Overtaker… he was gone.”
“He is gone,” the bald man said with a frown. “I… I can’t sense him at all. Our bond is destroyed.”
“What can get rid of an Overtaker’s bond?” the woman asked, surprised.
“I haven’t heard of something like this happening before,” the man said, before turning to Shara. “Young lady, do you know what you did to our Spirit?”
Shara seemed to shrink under the question. “N-no,” she said.
“Is there a problem here?” Ning asked.
“We don’t know,” the man said. “We’re trying to find out.”
Ning nodded. “Okay, so about her situation. What is she?” he asked.
“I do not know,” the old man said. “I will have to check the records to find out if there is anything. If not, she may be an anomaly.”
Shara looked at Ning.
“It’s not a bad thing, don’t worry,” he said and turned back around toward the old man. “How long will it take you to look up? Can I help you maybe?”
“Non-staff members are not allowed to read department records, so I will read it. Give me a day and come back tomorrow. I will have at least known if she had any power or not by then.”
Ning nodded. “Thank you for the help,” he said. “And for the Spirit that you guys lost… I hope you won’t blame her.”
The bald man seemed to want to say something, but the old man stopped him. “It is regretful that we lost Frank, but we do not hold a grudge against this young lady. It would be shameful to do so.”
“Thank you,” Ning said and began walking away.
Shara walked beside him, thanking the people meekly before walking past them. The woman walked along with them, showing them the way out.
“When should we come tomorrow?” Ning asked the woman.
“Around this time should be fine,” the woman said.
“Thank you for your help.”
Ning and Shara walked out of the building and made their way onto the street.
“What am I?” Shara asked. “I’m not a normal girl?”
“I do not know just yet what you are,” Ning said. “We should know tomorrow, hopefully.” “What if I’m something bad?” Shara asked. “What… what if I destroy all Spirits like I did to the one today?”
Ning did not have an answer to that, so he could only tell her the thing that he knew.
“Souls do not die,” he said. “No matter what form they are in. Human or Spirits. When the body is taken away, the soul returns to the Realm of Souls, waiting to be born again. Souls are so powerful that you can never touch them as you are. So, it is impossible for you to destroy them.”
“So, even though you may destroy a Spirit, you cannot destroy a Soul. You should keep that in mind henceforth and know that you can do nothing wrong with your powers.”
“Where did you learn all that?” Shara asked. “You sound like an old man.”
Ning laughed a little. “Do I, now?” he asked. “Forget about it then. Are you hungry? We should get something to eat.”
“We can eat back at the tavern,” Shara said.
“Eat what? Those stew?” Ning asked. “No offense, but while they are filling, they aren’t that flavorful. You have money, so you have to treat yourself once in a while. Come, let’s go to a proper restaurant.”
Shara looked at herself wearing a large robe over herself. “In this?” she asked.
“Uhh… I don’t see the problem,” he said. “As long as you have the money for it, they won’t send you back.”
“I… don’t have the money for it,” Shara said. “I don’t have a lot of change at the moment.”
Ning shook his head. “Don’t worry, I’ll feed you today. Just make sure to return it to me someday.”
Shara thought for a bit and nodded. “I still need to pay you your price,” she said.
“My price?” Ning asked.
“The 2 silver, for helping me with grandmother,” Shara said.
“Oh, right,” Ning said. He forgot he had asked that. For some reason, because he had gotten the system point, he thought himself paid already.
“So you ready to go eat?” he asked.
Shara nodded.
<Ding!>
<You have received a quest>
Ning read it discreetly and nearly laughed. He had gotten a quest to feed Shara a tasty meal,
one which she had likely never had in her frugal life.
“Maybe there is a restaurant around he- “
Ning grabbed Shara and pulled her toward him as a boy ran past her. “Sorry!” the boy shouted,
running far away.
“Oh, thank you,” Shara said, straightening herself.
Ning looked at her and then the boy. Shara looked toward him and saw his face. “What’s
wrong?” she asked.
“That boy,” Ning said. “There’s a Spirit behind him.”
“Oh,” Shara said, turning around. The boy had disappeared into the crowd at this point, so she
couldn’t see him properly.
“That Spirit… it went right through you,” Ning said.
“Huh?” Shara asked. “Isn’t… isn’t that not supposed to happen?”
“I don’t know what’s supposed to happen. This is all new to me,” Ning said. He thought for a
bit and nodded. “Maybe because that Spirit wasn’t trying to go into you or attack you, it was
safe.”
Which meant that Frank disappearing was likely her defense coming to work. “If a Spirit won’t target you, you won’t destroy it,” Ning told her.
“Then… I don’t have to be careful where I am?” Shara asked, beginning to feel hopeful.
“I believe so,” Ning said with a wide smile. “That’s a good news, isn’t it?”
