Gu Jiao’s injuries were mainly on her arms and upper shoulder, indicating how fiercely she had fought Han Ye in close quarters.

Gu Changqing didn’t bring any wound ointment with him.

"I'll take you to a medical hall." Gu Changqing said.

He lifted Gu Jiao onto his back.

"I can walk." Gu Jiao said.

But Gu Changqing showed no intention of putting her down, "You sprained your ankle."

"Did I?" Gu Jiao lay on Gu Changqing's back, silently twisting her right foot.

“The other one.” Gu Changqing replied without looking back.

Gu Jiao then rotated her left foot.

It seemed she really had sprained it; she couldn't move it at all.

Her ankle must have swollen.

She hadn’t even noticed.

Gu Changqing knew it would be like this.

Gu Jiao was a person always unconcerned about her own safety, as if getting hurt was just a part of her daily life.

But if anyone she cared about lost even a single strand of hair, she would make the perpetrator peel off a layer of their skin.

The previous carriage had long been overturned, and the horse, startled, had fled long ago.

The only one left lying on the ground was the unconscious coachman.

As Gu Changqing approached, the coachman began to groggily wake up.

“Whose coachman is this?” Gu Changqing asked Gu Jiao.

“Mine.” Gu Jiao replied, switching back to her male juvenile voice.

With the killing intent fading, Gu Changqing said to the coachman, "Follow us."

The coachman had no idea what had happened, but seeing the aftermath of the fierce battle around him, he shrank his neck and quickly followed Gu Changqing.

The coachman was from the State of Yan. With the siblings using the language of the State of Zhao, they didn’t need to hold back in front of him.

Gu Changqing’s figure was tall and lean, while Gu Jiao, perched on his back, was small.

The little tuft of hair on top of her head swayed in the breeze.

As Gu Changqing glanced at the shadows on the ground, he couldn’t help but chuckle slightly.

“How did you know I was here?” Gu Jiao asked.

With the coachman present, she naturally continued speaking with her male juvenile voice, which sounded much more convincing than when she was fighting at the borders of the State of Zhao.

Gu Changqing softly replied, “I didn’t know. I just happened to pass by and saw two horses running loose, so I came to check.”

His words were half true.

In the State of Zhao, he was a subject, a military official, and it was his duty to share his ruler’s burdens, punish the wicked, and uphold justice.

But this wasn’t the State of Zhao.

His purpose in coming to the State of Yan was simply to find a way to treat Gu Jiao's uncontrollable condition, and everything else was none of his concern.

Yet, for some reason, he still came over, as if there was an invisible force pulling him from the shadows.

"Have you... been hurt a lot?" Gu Jiao noticed a scar, about an inch long, on the back of Gu Changqing’s neck.

It was clearly a fresh scar that had just healed.

There were surely more on his body.

“No, I wasn’t hurt.” Gu Changqing, unaware she had seen a scar on him, denied it outright.

Gu Jiao didn’t ask further.

"But, how did you end up in the State of Yan?" Gu Changqing asked.

When Gu Changqing left the State of Zhao, Gu Yan had not yet encountered any troubles, and Gu Jiao had never expressed any plans to go to the State of Yan.

Gu Jiao explained to him what happened to Gu Yan, mentioning that he had been injured by Nangong Li: "… Ah Yan needs surgery within six months, and I heard the State of Yan might have the operating room I need. At that time, I had planned to leave with you, but you already set off."

Given Gu Yan’s condition at the time, traveling was not ideal.

It was fortunate that there were the admission letters for school in the State of Yan that Little Jing Kong’s master had sent over.

Gu Changqing hadn’t expected so much to have happened in the capital after he left.

He wasn't someone who typically regretted his choices, but at this moment, he couldn't help but think that if he had delayed his departure by a few days, he might have been able to come to the State of Yan with them.

Then again, upon second thought, perhaps it wasn’t such a bad thing that they didn’t travel together.

It was better that his younger siblings didn’t witness the dark days he had endured in the underground martial arts arena.

"How is Ah Yan doing now?" Gu Changqing asked.

“The surgery was very successful.” Gu Jiao answered.

Gu Changqing was slightly taken aback, “The surgery’s already done?”

Gu Jiao nodded her head, “Yes, I performed the surgery myself.”

Gu Changqing felt a weight lift off his shoulders but couldn’t help asking, “It won’t recur in the future, will it?”

Gu Jiao replied cautiously, “As long as he recovers properly, the chances of recurrence are low.”

A gentle smile formed at the corners of Gu Changqing’s lips, “JiaoJiao is truly amazing.”

Gu Jiao seriously agreed, “Yes, I think I’m amazing too.”

Gu Changqing burst out laughing.

He carried Gu Jiao to the edge of a wild lotus pond, bent down to pick a large lotus leaf, and handed it to the coachman beside him, saying in the State of Yan language, "Make it usable for my younger... brother."

He almost said sister.

The coachman suddenly understood.

So, they were brothers.

But... who spoils their little brother like this? Was it really necessary?

Let him walk by himself!

Let him hold his own umbrella!

You shouldn’t spoil him like this!

The coachman obediently fashioned the lotus leaf into an umbrella for Gu Jiao.

The shade immediately provided some relief, and Gu Jiao let out a contented sigh.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
