In the Zhaoyang Hall of the imperial palace.
Shangguan Yan's breath was growing weaker. Even though the Imperial Advisor had administered a life-prolonging pill, it seemed to have little effect.
The Emperor had not attended the morning court.
He paced inside the room, occasionally glancing toward the doorway.
His eyes were cold and filled with fury. He was, after all, a tyrant and a mad ruler, and no one knew what terrifying actions he might take in a fit of rage.
All the palace servants were silent, trembling with fear.
He snapped impatiently, “Why haven't they come yet? Are the disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall dead?”
The Imperial Advisor’s Hall held an esteemed position, and the Emperor of Great Yan rarely used such harsh words to criticize them.
Zhang Dequan hurriedly trotted out, instructing the eunuch at the door, “Go check again! See if the disciples from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall have returned!”
The Emperor glared at the Imperial Advisor and said irritably, “Zhen already said to have Wang Xu take people to tie him up and bring him here! But you insisted on sending the disciples of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall to invite him!”
The Imperial Advisor replied, “That kid... Wang Xu likely wouldn’t be able to capture him.”
“Humph!” The Emperor coldly flicked his sleeve.
"They're here! They're here! They've arrived!" Zhang Dequan suddenly rushed into the room, excitedly announcing, "The disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall have brought him!"
The Emperor frowned and said, “What are you waiting for? Let them in immediately!”
“Yes!” Zhang Dequan called out to those outside, “Hurry up! All of you, hurry!”
They were already hurrying. The disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall, along with Xiao Heng, almost ran full speed into Zhaoyang Hall.
Although Gu Jiao had entered the imperial palace before, she had not met the Emperor, so the Emperor did not recognize "Xiao Liulang."
The Emperor's gaze fell on the ordinary-looking young man, “You are Xiao Liulang?”
Xiao Heng glanced at the screen in front of the bed and said, “I am Xiao Liulang's medical assistant. We were attacked on the way, and he was held up by assassins. This is his medicine chest.”
As he spoke, he took off the basket from his back and handed it to Zhang Dequan, who was standing nearby.
He knew to hand it to the Grand Eunuch, a protocol not usually known by ordinary medical assistants.
However, at this critical moment, no one paid attention to such a minor detail.
The Emperor had called for a physician for the former Crown Princess, but the physician was attacked on the way. To say this was a coincidence——no one would believe it!
The Emperor, furious, commanded, “Summon Wang Xu!”
Zhang Dequan immediately responded, "Yes!"
The Imperial Advisor gave Xiao Heng a deep, scrutinizing look.
Xiao Heng’s peripheral vision also caught a glimpse of the Imperial Advisor.
This man resembled the description Gu Jiao had given of the Imperial Advisor, standing confidently beside the Emperor without a trace of flattery or fear.
It must be the Imperial Advisor.
The Imperial Advisor knew that Gu Jiao didn’t have a medicine boy or a medical assistant; otherwise, she would have brought one when she performed surgery on Gu Yan last time.
Of course, he could claim to be newly hired.
It was uncertain whether the Imperial Advisor would believe him though.
“Give me the medicine chest.” The Imperial Advisor said to Zhang Dequan.
Zhang Dequan retrieved the little medicine chest from the back basket and handed it to the Imperial Advisor.
The Imperial Advisor took the little medicine chest and walked behind the screen.
Xiao Heng's gaze remained fixed on the screen. Though it was only a few steps away, he couldn’t bring himself to cross the distance.
“That medical assistant, come and assist.”
The Imperial Advisor spoke calmly.
Xiao Heng's eyes flickered. Without waiting for the Emperor’s permission, he stepped forward.
The Imperial Advisor placed the little medicine chest on a stool by the bed and said to Xiao Heng, “Open it.”
Without even trying it yourself, you directly tell me to open it. Are you too lazy, or do you know that I’m the only one in this room who can open it?
This thought flashed through Xiao Heng's mind.
To be honest, he wasn’t entirely sure whether he could open it either.
If he couldn’t, would he really have to kick it open right in front of the Imperial Advisor?
Fortunately, as soon as Xiao Heng lightly touched it, the little medicine chest automatically popped open.
It... opened easily.
The Imperial Advisor’s expression remained unchanged. He took out some hemostatic medicine and a few other drugs that Xiao Heng had never seen before.
He then began treating Shangguan Yan’s wounds.
Shangguan Yan was covered in injuries. The lighter wounds had already been treated by the Imperial Advisor; now he needed to address the severe wound on her waist.
Shangguan Yan’s condition was dire. Even with emergency medicine, they could only stabilize her for the time being.
The Imperial Advisor said, “She needs surgery.”
From behind the screen, the Emperor said, “Then perform the surgery!”
The Imperial Advisor replied, “I cannot perform this surgery. Only Xiao Liulang can. Moreover, time is running out. If surgery isn’t performed within the next half hour, she will lose her last chance at survival.”
Half an hour…
Xiao Heng clenched his fists.
The Emperor had sent Wang Xu and the disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall to bring Xiao Liulang. If they didn’t bring him back, they were to present their heads.
Xiao Liulang had been ambushed, and no one could guarantee that he was still alive.
Even if he survived by luck, from the imperial palace to the location of the incident, just getting there would take more than half an hour. Even if they used the Black Wind Cavalry of the Han Family and ran the horses to the point of breaking their legs, it would still be impossible to get the person back in time.
The stifling atmosphere filled the entire Zhaoyang Hall.
Shangguan Yan’s life was slipping away.
Xiao Heng felt a dull pain in his chest, and suddenly, he found it hard to breathe.
Was it because he was worried about JiaoJiao?
Or——
The Imperial Advisor held Shangguan Yan’s wrist and said, “This is bad, her pulse is gone!”
Xiao Heng’s eyes trembled.
“Your Majesty! Your Majesty! They’re here! They’ve arrived!”
Zhang Dequan’s excited voice rang out from outside the door.
Wang Xu had brought the person into the imperial palace.
He had just arrived at the palace gates when he encountered Gu Jiao stepping down from a carriage.
“Everyone, out.” Gu Jiao strode into the room with large steps.
The Emperor: “Zhen…”
Gu Jiao: “You too, get out.”
The Emperor: “…”
——The Emperor was kicked out.
Everyone in the room, except Xiao Heng and the Imperial Advisor, was cleared out by Gu Jiao.
Xiao Heng waited outside the screen.
The scene inside was a bit gory, and Gu Jiao didn’t want him to witness it.
Gu Jiao opened her little medicine chest and used disinfectant to sterilize her hands.
The Imperial Advisor briefly described Shangguan Yan’s condition.
Gu Jiao quickly came to a conclusion, “Fractures at the second and fourth lumbar vertebrae, accompanied by multiple soft tissue contusions and likely more hidden injuries… This place isn’t suitable for surgery. Prepare a stretcher.”
The Imperial Advisor glanced at her and reminded, “She has no pulse.”
Gu Jiao, now wearing gloves, approached the bed and looked at the pale Shangguan Yan. Calmly and in a fast-paced tone, she said, “I know. Start resuscitation——1 milligram of epinephrine, prepare for injection.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
