Chapter 661: Upgrading Equips

Although the Voodoo Mask was called a 'Mask', it was really a helmet equip.
From a design point of view, not only did it protect Lu Li's head, but it also extended out to cover parts of his face, giving him a fierce expression.
The bandana could still be worn, and players could choose between wearing it on the inside or the outside of the mask.
Lu Li decided to wear it inside the mask and only wear it outside when he needed to hide his identity.
Voodoo Mask (Exquisite Gold): Armour +42, Agility +30, Strength + 18, Socket Slot +1. Special Effect: Certain chance of discovering Stealth units regardless of level. Special Effect 2: Icy Veins, Your mind is as calm as ice. When activated, become immune to psychological crowd control effects such as Fear. Special Effects 3: When user critically strikes opponent consecutively, your third attack has a 10% chance to deal the combined damage of your previous two attacks. Requires level 40. Durability 95/95.
The first special effect was quite useless for Lu Li. Discovering Stealthed units near him regardless of level would only be useful against monsters.
Since he was the highest level in the game, it was completely useless in PvP. There were also very few Stealthed monsters in the game and Lu Li rarely ever encountered any. As such, this special effect was next to useless for him.
The random factor in Dawn made the game more fair. Some people were like gods and received equips that had overpowered special effects, but it was not a surprise or disappointment to receive a useless special effect.
The second special effect was quite decent; it granted the user immunity to crowd control magic.
If you sensed that your opponent was about to cast Fear or any other disabling ability, you could activate this to gain immunity.
However, once afflicted by the Fear, you would not be able to nullify its effect with the active.
These actives required higher mechanical skills and game sense in order to be used properly. Casual players would often struggle with these types of pre-emptive skills.
However, Lu Li's favorite active out of all three was the third one.
When player dealt consecutive Critical Strikes, the third attack would have a 10% chance to deal the combine damage of the previous two hits. For example, if Lu Li crit for 400 damage twice in a row, the third hit would have a chance to deal 800 damage.
400 + 400 + 800 = 1600.
Most players had around 2000 to 3000 HP, so killing someone in three hits was entirely possible.
Lu Li then equipped the other four pieces of the Voodoo set, activating the set effects.
Set Effect 2/4: Cloak of Shadow Skill +1. Set Effect 4/4 After a successful Cheap Shot, gain one additional Combo Point. The following attack deals double damage.
A Thief's combo usually started with Preparation then Cheap Shot.
Preparation gave two combo points, along with Cheap Shot, and now Lu Li gained an additional Combo Point from the set effect.
Based on Lu Li's mechanics, the success rate of Cheap Shot would be quite high. After each successful Cheap Shot, he would have a total of five combo points. He could follow up with a maximum damage Finality which would also deal double the damage.
Lu Li felt so powerful to the point that he was almost afraid of himself.
A tinge of emotion overcame him – in his past life, he had only heard about stories this legendary set. Now, he was truly wearing it for himself, and he felt extremely accomplished and powerful.
Besides his ring and gloves, every piece of equipment he was wearing was either Gold or Dark Gold.
He was confident that even Sorrowless wasn't up to his standard of equipment. High-level players would often sacrifice equipment grade and stats for special effects on their old Silver grade equips.
Water Fairy was likely the only one who was keeping up with Lu Li; the tomboy was infamous for her willingness to spend money for equips. Whenever the Mercenary Groups would find something overpowered, they would immediately go to Water Fairy to sell it for money.
What a waste of her parent's money!
Lu Li thanked March Rain and found a nearby level 40-50 map to test out his new DPS.
He was level 42 and at 74% HP, but had died and lost 10% EXP at the World Tree. Now, he was on 46% EXP, so reaching level 45 would be quite a difficult task.
He managed to upgrade four pieces of his equips in one go.
Many of the special effects also changed, so he needed to familiarize himself with them.
He chose to grind on a monster that was three levels higher than him. Although his Critical Chance was decreased, he still managed to crit consecutively and witnessed the power of the third special effect on his Voodoo Mask.
It was so powerful! The monster was still on half HP but was instantly killed.
The set effect also significantly increased his DPS. The monsters were being instantly killed before the stun duration was even up.
If he could stun Sorrowless first… could he instantly kill him with a full combo?
This was a question that even Lu Li couldn't answer. He was a man that firmly believed in results, so before he actually pulled it off, he could never be sure and could only speculate.
Before the first Professional League, there was bound to be another opportunity for them to cross paths.
How many of those Star Players would withstand a full combo from Lu Li? His heart was beating fast at the thought of this and his competitive nature was once again lit up as he looked forward to the next tournament.
Lu Li continued on testing his equips while leveling up.
When it was time to log off, he had only increased his EXP bar by 2%. However, he was more familiar and comfortable with his equipment effects and no longer needed to think twice about it anymore.
After logging on the next day, he did nothing for the whole morning, apart from taking out all the Strengthening stones in his storage.
He was hoping that luck would be on his side and that he would gain additional special effects when strengthening his equips. However, it would still be very beneficial for him to gain extra stats from upgrading.
Strengthening equipment was something that players in Dawn both loved and hated to do.
This was the game's way of balancing out the available gold resources. Due to the large player base, if a fraction of the players decided to enhance their equips, the gold used would balance out that which was looted on a daily basis.
Strengthening equips required both Strengthening stones and gold.
The first enhancement required one Strengthing Stone and 10 Gold. The second enhancement required two Strengthening Stones and 20 Gold, and so on and so forth.
The first and second enhancement only increased the stats on an equip. However, after the third enhancement, there was a certain chance to gain a new special effect.
Lu Li decided to use up his Strengthening stones and gold to try and enhance every equip at least three times.
He decided to stop at three because failing an enhancement at +3 would have a chance of decreasing the stats on the equip. Failing at +4 would decrease the stats even more and at +5, there was a chance to destroy the equip completely.
