Chapter 1431: A Small Demon Hideout
I dropped down into the hole as the cover slammed shut above me.
It was quite a drop as it went down several floors and there was no light to show the end of the drop.
Thankfully, that wasn’t really a problem thanks to my Umbramancy so I was able to see the floor coming up to me and flared my wings to slow down my descent, my feet touching the ground softly.
I found myself in what looked like the sewers of the city of sorts except instead of waterways carrying the city’s drainage, there were pipes stretching all around the tunnels.
Seems like Lilith had also modernised the city’s sewage systems.
She seriously did a lot of work on this place huh? Hmm… I wonder if she could help Emilia out with some of the modernisation plans I gave to Justinia…
Then again… I don’t want to bring too much modernisation into this World since industrialisation would bring a lot of changes to the landscape and I want to explore this World before it changes.
Besides… The main point of modernising is to make life easier and magic is already doing that for everyone so there’s no need to take the bad parts about modernising either. We just need to find the best from our World to introduce it here while leaving out the bad stuff.
On another note… Why do these people always hide in the sewers? They really need better security down here…
The path here split to the left and right and I looked around to see if there were any clues as to where that demon might have gone.
I didn’t even need to look that close as I found what was clearly a bit of cloth that got snagged on one of the pipes leading towards the right.
That demon must have gotten his cloak caught on this might and it tore off a bit of it as he walked by.
I cloaked myself in shadow again and snuck in the direction of where I believe the guy was headed off to, keeping my eye out for any traps just in case.
Either they didn’t bother to set any or they couldn’t, there were no traps around and the path eventually led to another dead end.
This time it was pretty obvious it was an illusion since I could see the pipes leading into the wall and it didn’t make sense for anyone to put a wall here while there were still pipes running through.
Thus, I went ahead to first stick out my hand towards the wall to press against it just to test it out and nodded in satisfaction when I found my hand passing through it easily.
I then strode forward confidently and passed through the wall, only to hear a soft ’click’ sound before something was piercing through the air to my left.
I didn’t really need to worry though as a shield of light appeared beside me and deflected away the arrow that was aimed at my neck to clatter onto the ground, right next to my foot that had stepped on the pressure plate.
Thanks, Eins.
Looking in the direction that the arrow was shot at, I found a crossbow mounted to the wall and aimed at me, undoubtedly a trap designed to shoot at anyone that passed through the wall.
I guess the illusion wall was designed to make the person let down their guard and end up stepping on this pressure plate to activate the crossbow that would then shoot at them from their blind spot.
Too bad I have other pairs of eyes keeping a lookout for me so the trap didn’t work.
I lifted my foot from the hidden pressure plate and continued forward, this time being more cautious as I checked my footing to make sure there weren’t any more traps.
Thankfully, there weren’t anymore branching paths so it was a straight road down to where I believe was their hideout which turned out to be a chamber that was hidden between two large pipes.
I squeezed myself between them and paused when I heard voices coming from inside muttering something.
I got low and snuck closer to the chamber, finding that it had definitely been converted to some kind of living space where it was obviously supposed to be a pressure room for the pipes before.
It seems like they had brought in tables and chairs alongside some sleeping bags and there was even a wooden board with what looked like a crude drawing of the city’s layout, clearly there to act as some kind of planning board.
As I snuck closer to the chamber, the voices got clearer.
“I don’t know… I felt a big change in the town so I went to take a look and it seems like it’s changed.”
“Changed? Changed how?”
“Well, for one, everyone there seemed to have changed into girls.”
“Huh? What does that even mean? Did new demons come in and take over?”
“I’m not sure… But the entire place definitely changed and they seem to be more focused on expanding the settlement now. I didn’t even see the usual sight of torture and stuff.”
“Then these must be new demons who moved in and killed the previous occupants…”
“It is likely. That’s why I decided not to make contact with them for now.”
No doubt about it, whoever these people were… They were talking about the demon town that we recently took over…
And this must be another group of demons who have also associated themselves with them but were hiding within the city instead of being part of their group.
No doubt they also figured out that things have changed there so I’ll probably need to get this new piece of information back to them that they were already under surveillance.
Most likely, the demoness maids that Katsuki had recruited should also be informed since they might also have been point of contacts for these guys as well.
As I was thinking about whether I should retreat now or proceed further to see what else I could find, I heard whispers coming from behind as well.
“Ughh… Why do we have to hide in the sewers…”
“Did you forget where we are? If we hide anywhere else, we’d be dead.”
Shit… My way back is blocked… No choice then.
I slipped into the chamber while the two people that were already inside had their backs turned to me, taking the chance to scan around to look for a place to hide.
There weren’t a lot of choices and I had to settle for slipping myself into one of the sleeping bags in the corner of the room to hide myself.
The bag itself was rather puffy so it shouldn’t reveal me to anyone who looked over in my direction at least.
Right on time, a few more demons slipped in between those two pipes to join the other two that were already inside.
“Hey, we’re back.”
The two demons turned and I confirmed that one of them was the one we met before, namely the purple skinned demon that we met near the Tree of Death.
I made sure to sink myself a little deeper inside the bag so that I wasn’t stocking out of it but I could at least listen in on their conversation. Unfortunately, that also meant that I couldn’t see what was going on outside either.
“So what did you find?”
“Those succubi sisters closed up shop. The Mayor also seems to be busy with something but I don’t know what yet.”
“As we thought… Something changed. And it’s a really big change.”
“What do you think it is?”
“We believe it might be another group of demons with different goals than us. They probably took over and chased out the old group.”
“Should we make contact with them?”
“Right now we’re just scouting them out. See if we can find out what their intentions are before we reveal ourselves to them. I’m not sure if they even know of our existence yet.”
“I wonder though… I believe I might know what the change is.”
Hmm… If I’m not wrong, that last voice should belong to that purple skinned demon.
“What? What is it?”
“Well… It might be a stretch, but I met a group of people travelling towards the tree the other day… And I think they might be involved in this.”
Oh come on… We barely interacted with you… Why did this demon immediately think we’re involved? At least… That’s assuming he didn’t meet anyone else in this period of time…
“Who? What did they do?”
“Hmmm… I’m not too sure. They were strong enough to chase me off after all.”
“That strong? Then what should we do? Stalk them?”
“There’s no need~ We can just go ahead and ask them directly.”
“Isn’t that dangerous?”
“Of course not, their leader already showed up herself in our hideout after all~ Look at her lying down there and not moving at all~”
What?! How did he know?!
