Chapter 562 Let’s Rescue Eins
Chapter 562 Let’s Rescue Eins
?I turned back to help Gwen and the others finish off the Shadow Summon that the Renegade summoned.
With my help it was a simple matter of just stunning it with a [Static Bolt] and letting the other three kill it.
Gwen exhaled before turning to me, “What happened to the other one?”
“Sorry, it seems like he managed to escape and he even took those two corpses with him. Are Shadow Devourers really made from corpses?”
Olgar grumbled, “I don’t believe it’s something that normal people like us would know but this would explain why that bastard had to destroy an entire city back in the past…”
Thorn spat on the ground, “By my father’s beard… He wasn’t just looking for sacrifices was he? He didn’t actually run away after destroying a city but he just left because he already fulfilled his goal?”
“Damnit… Does that mean we really fell into his hideout or something?”
I raised a finger, “Better yet… The fact that Jurga had something on him and he knew that it would transform him meant that he must have met whoever that guy was that created these monsters.”
Olgar grimaced, “Well… I guess I can say that it seems we have landed ourselves in a pretty fucked situation haven’t we?”
Gwen didn’t agree, however, “Heh, with Aster around though, we have nothing to worry about!”
Err… I mean… Sure, I guess?
After all, even if that guy had an army of Shadow Devourers, I have an army of Shadow Guards so it should be fine.
That’s why I decided not to refute her claim and just scratched my head in embarrassment while the other two Rejmars looked at me.
“Ahem… Anyway… Umm… Can we talk about that altar?” I asked, gesturing to the golden altar in the room.
All of them turned to it.
“Hmm… That’s gold isn’t it?” Thorn asked.
Olgar glanced at him, “What? You thinking of taking it?”
“Why not? Clearly it’s some kind of nefarious artefact that’s sitting in this Dungeon that’s being used for some nefarious ritual. If we can take it out of here or even break it down, then it’s a good thing, right?”
“Yeah, assuming we don’t get cursed from doing so, of course. Besides, are you going to carry it out of here? We don’t even know if there’s a way out yet?”
Thorn pointed at the hole in the corner, “Obviously it’s right there, isn’t it?”
Gwen nodded, “I was also thinking that someone must have broken their way out of there before I was attacked by those Shadow Devourers.”
I raised a hand, “Err… Sorry about this but… I made that hole.”
Now it was my turn to be stared at again.
I scratched my cheek, “I err… Woke up in a prison cell and found myself trapped there. So I tried to punch the wall and it broke. That’s how I found myself out here.”
Thorn gave me a look, “You’re telling us you broke open the wall? How?”
“Erm… By punching it?”
Their looks now turned to incredulity.
I shrugged, “I’m just saying what happened ok? Not like lying about it serves me any purpose…”
“Oh no, I believe you Aster,” Gwen corrected. “I’m just surprised that something like that worked.”
The other two still had a look of doubt on their faces but I guess they decided that there was no point in arguing with me anyway.
I then continued, “One thing I noticed though… We haven’t seen any other people aside from other Rejmars… And for some reason, I was brought to a place where I had to literally break out of to enter this part of the Dungeon while every Rejmar I found woke up here.”
Gwen realised what I was suggesting immediately, “Does this mean that they are targeting Rejmars specifically?”
“That is my guess anyway,” I admitted. “And if you don’t mind… I kind of have a tracking spell on one of my… Umm… Our companions, so we could head in that direction to find her rather than just wander around. She’s also not a Rejmar so maybe that’s a way out of here.”
Olgar shrugged, “Sounds like a good plan, let’s go with that.”
Thorn pointed at the altar again, “So what, are we really going to leave that there?”
“I’m not gonna carry it when there’s Shadow Devourers around for fuck’s sake. If you want that gold on that thing so badly, carry it yourself.”
Thorn made a disappointed face but didn’t say anything else.
I then took the lead and started guiding my party down the path that led to where I felt Eins’s position was.
I checked again by looking through her eyes and I found that she was now stuck in a cell, which was weird considering that I had her walk out of it earlier when I first woke up before giving her the order to try and reach me.
What happened in between that time?
When I used her to try and open the door, I found it to be locked and no amount of pushing or pulling did the door budge in the slightest.
I even gave it a solid punch as well but nothing happened.
Odd…
I wonder if I could look through her memories to–
As soon as that thought came through my mind, my vision changed and I saw myself looking through Eins’s eyes in a different location.
I’m guessing this was her memory so it does look like I am able to look through the memories of my Shadow Guards if I want to.
In the memory, she was standing in the corridor alone in the darkness, though she could see everything despite that due to our Umbramancy proficiency. This must have been shortly after she had escaped from her cell.
She started walking towards the right where it was a simple featureless passageway aside from the carvings on the wall like what mine had contained.
The walk lasted for less than a minute before she came across an open door and I realised that she was also experiencing the same thing as I did with the Dungeon looping her back.
But for some reason, while my corridor had multiple doors, her corridor only contained her own cell.
She paused at the open cell and turned back, walking in the opposite direction this time.
Once again, something that was different from mine was that she returned back to the same corridor again, this time from the opposite side.
It seems like she was trapped in a complete loop.
That was when something moved in the darkness and she looked up, right as a Shadow Devourer appeared from the opposite side of the corridor.
However, instead of attacking her, it simply walked up to her like she wasn’t even there and moved past her without even sparing her a glance.
Eins seemed to have found it odd and decided to follow behind the monster.
Interestingly, that negated the loop as she managed to get to another part of the Dungeon where the Shadow Devourer stopped at an intersection.
The monster seemed to sniff the air for a moment before turning left and Eins followed after it.
This continued on for a while as she simply maintained a fixed distance between herself and the monster in front of her, neither of them coming across anyone else.
Then her ears pricked up as she heard the sound of people talking and a weird sound of something hammering against something that was interspersed with sounds of some bubbles popping.
The sound got louder and louder and it was clear that the monster was heading towards the direction of the noise, though the voices were too muffled for her to make out any of the contents of what was being said.
The Shadow Devourer reached another intersection and turned towards the tunnel where the sound was coming from and she sped up slightly to catch up to it.
The moment she made the turn however, it felt like she passed through some kind of liquid as the vision changed and she was dropped into the same cell that she was in right now.
She had then tried to open the door but, as I had tried earlier, it did not budge no matter what she did.
Even attacking the wall made no difference and she had been trapped inside here ever since.
I shut off the vision and returned to myself, only to realise Gwen and the other two Rejmars were looking at me in concern.
“Aster? What happened? You suddenly stopped moving and had this blank look on your face,” She asked.
“Ah… I tried to trace the location of Ei… Err… Our companion. Seems like it made me black out a bit but I think I know roughly where she is now.”
The three of them simply accepted my explanation and I started to lead them for real this time, trying my best to move in the direction of where I felt Eins’s presence to be.
Now I’m really wondering just what in the World did we end up getting ourselves into? Are the other girls safe? Why are we even sent here and what was that altar really for?
One thing I know for sure though… Once I find the guy responsible, I’m punching him in the face.
