Chapter 421 - 421: Startled Awake
Chapter 421 – 421: Startled Awake
By the time she finished the contents on her plate, Luna was already sleepy. William hadn't returned after he had hastened out of the hut a few hours ago. The servants had come and gone, most of them quickly leaving after sending the things to the room, none daring to stay a minute further with her.
She wondered what the alpha had told the servants to make them feel scared even to take a look at her. Though she felt a sharp glare now and again, it was not something that she couldn't manage. When the last of the servants left after collecting the leftover food from her table, the goddess relaxed, stretching her limbs like a cat.
Getting up from the chair, she looked around, finally getting the room all to herself. Though it hadn't looked like much from outside, the hut was quite spacious from inside. And for something that was constructed in the middle of nowhere in a time when it was hard to transport anything from the mainland to a remote area, the room looked quite good.
Other than the table and the chairs that were hand-carved, a huge bed lay on one side of the room against the wall, made of wood so red that it looked like blood. The flimsy white draperies that hung from the ceiling were separated from the middle, giving her a good view of what appeared like a soft mattress covered in blue silk.
Luna looked back and forth between the bed and the carpeted floor, sleepily. She felt like she hadn't slept properly in ages. And now, with a long bath and a full stomach, she wanted nothing more than to catch up on her long-awaited sleep. Her body had used up too much magic, trying to heal her injuries. The fatigue was weighing hardly on her eyes.
Finally, choosing her resting place, she sat down on the carpet, leaning against the edge of the bed tiredly. Just as she closed her eyes, she felt a familiar presence pushing through to the front of her mind. It brought with it a feeling of unease, as questions she had avoided all day started to resurface.
The alpha's face flashed in her mind as the stone's voice echoed in her head.
'Master, what do you think of the man?' The Dam Sehlah asked in a mischievous voice. It paused, stopping to laugh before it resumed the tease. 'Isn't he quite the good-looking wolf?'
Luna ignored the stone's tone. She knew that it was just trying to get on her nerves again. But that reminded her of something that she had noticed when the man had been standing way too close to her a while ago. The corners of her mouth drooped down into a frown as she was reminded of the pitch-black shadow that was slowly starting to surround him.
"There's something very off about him. I can see a heavy darkness looming around him that has not yet consumed him." She said, rubbing her heavy eyelids in irritation.
She wanted to ignore it and go about her work, but something told her that it was not going to be as easy as that. For some strange reason, the man felt very familiar- and not in a good way. Had she met him during one of her reincarnations? She wondered, trying hard to flip through her memories on earth.
But it was no use. Her memories of earth, except for that of her last life as Elize, were still muddled. Trying to find something among them was like looking for a needle in a stack of hay. She sighed, giving up on it, finally. Thankfully, her body was starting to heal. She felt much better than how she had been when she woke up by the lake.
'Could it be related to his future?' The red stone asked, persisting on the question.
Luna closed her eyes, placing her head on the edge of the mattress tiredly. "It could." She mumbled sleepily.
'What are you planning to do?' The Dam Sehlah's excited voice prodded, poking at her consciousness again and again.
But the goddess was long asleep. The stone's voice fell on deaf ears until it finally gave up and retreated to the path of magic that was circulating in her body, healing the sleeping woman's soul with every passing second, slowly yet steadily. Its hum reverberated in her ears as she was drawn into a familiar memory.
She found herself laughing as she ran along a long corridor lit by a thousand golden orbs carrying the moonlight essence. Luna knew what was going to happen next, and she found herself longing for that chance encounter. Her maids were right on her trail, calling desperately for her to stop running.
The goddess poked her tongue out at them playfully, turning her head slightly as she kept rushing forward. And that was when it happened. She banged straight onto a hard surface, making her head throb ever so slightly in shock. A young Luna frowned, stepping back quickly from the long fingers that were moving towards her arms.
She raised a finger at the person in front. "Watch where-"
Her words failed her as she stared into a pair of beautiful green eyes. It had a tinge of blue in it as the moonlight essence from the orbs from either side reflected in his eyes. It sent a wave of electricity through her nerves, buzzing through her bloodstream into the pit of her stomach, making her knees wobble slightly.
It was not the first time that she was seeing him in the palace. The prince was a friend of her brother's and was a frequent visitor to the Golden Palace. But after their last encounter, she had made sure to avoid him at all costs. It was too embarrassing to face him again.
The goddess clenched her hands, cursing herself for being weak-hearted just because of his handsome face. Yes, it was just because of his handsome face, she reassured herself, trying to find solace in it. But even that didn't work. Especially since the man was standing only a hand span away from her.
"Are you alright?" His melodiously deep voice rang in her ears, making her heart leap out of her chest in excitement.
Luna glared at him, trying to mask the chaotic state of her mind. "You again!" She exclaimed, shaking a finger at the god.
At that, prince Sargon relaxed, the worry lines on his forehead flattening back into its flawless state. The goddess found it hard to look away from his eyes as he stepped towards her with a mischievous smile. Her heart was melting too fast for her own comfort. The man was once again making her feel things that she had never felt before.
"I know," Sargon said, chuckling softly. "Isn't it wonderful?" He asked with a wink.
As she felt a smile tug at her lips, she quickly looked away, side-stepping the man to walk forward. She glanced to the side to see her maids frozen in the middle of the hallway, their expressions reflecting their confusion and fear at the man who had quickly turned around to trail behind her like a needy puppy.
"Are you avoiding me?" The prince asked, matching up to her stride effortlessly.
Luna ignored him, praying that he was not able to hear the sound of her heart hammering against her chest like a war drum. "I see no reason to talk to you." She said, her voice breaking nervously.
Sargon chuckled, the mischief radiating from his body. "Is it enough reason that I've utterly fallen for you?" He asked, leaning forward to whisper in her ears.
Her eyes widened in shock at the statement. Had the future emperor of all heavens just confessed to her? She wondered, thunderstruck for a moment. Blood rushed into her cheeks as she stepped away from him in embarrassment. The prince was smiling ear to ear, looking satisfied at the state into which he had pulled her with just a few words.
"Shameless!" Luna exclaimed, turning away from the man in a hurry.
She ran forward without looking back, eager to escape the tension that had started to build between the two of them. But the warmth that spread across her heart couldn't be stopped. She was happy beyond comparison., she thought, smiling from ear to ear.
Suddenly, she was startled awake by a long howl. Luna sat up straight on the carpeted floor, pushing away from the mattress, still wrapped in the glow of the beautiful memory. The smile that had unconsciously taken its place on her lips vanished, slowly fading into a frown.
She had purposefully chosen to sleep on the floor, thinking that the alpha would return at some point in the night. The moon's rays shone brightly through the only window in the room, signaling midnight. Yet the man was nowhere to be seen. The howl sounded once again, this time from somewhere further away from the hut.
