Chapter 67 - Forming An Alliance
Chapter 67 – Forming An Alliance
Lin Xiaofei stepped out of that corner of the garden, she didn't rush to go back where Lin Shen Yu was. She glanced back to the unkept space where they discussed their matters and saw that the man was no longer standing there.
In no time, a worried Lin Shen Yu came into her line of sight. He runs over to her and complained, "Why did cousin leave me alone there? Do you even know how I was so embarrassed when some womenfolk passed by and saw me talking by myself?!"
Lin Xiaofei cast him a side-glance, "I was interested in this part of the garden and out of curiosity I wandered around," not waiting for him to complain some more, she said, "We should go back to the hall to avoid having grandfather worry."
Lin Shen Yu found her excuse strange since there was nothing in that part of the garden that seemed to catch anyone's eyes. Shaking his thoughts off his mind, he decided to go along with his cousin and went back to the banquet.
When they returned to the hall where the banquet was happening, there were a few people who didn't return from their walk. They were probably too engrossed that they forgot to return or they were called by someone in the back palace.
Being called by someone in the back palace wasn't strange or rare at all. The women who lived inside the palace were either the relatives of the royal family who came to visit or the concubines that were hard to count because of how many there were..
As Lin Xiaofei went back to her seat, out of the corner of her eyes, she saw a young maid coming up to Song Lin's side and whispered to her ear.
Song Lin was at first annoyed that a maid interrupted her chat with her friends but when she heard what the maid had to say, she became interested and listened enthusiasticly.
The maid slipped a letter in her hand and it took Song Lin a few seconds to look down and read what was written in it.
The writer of the letter wanted to invite her behind the Winter Moon pagoda before the banquet ends and before the guests decide to go home. The signed name on the letter wasn't written inside the letter. She was surprised and curious who was the sender thus, she turned to the maid to ask, "Who gave you this?"
"That…" the maid hesitated because she was unsure how to tell her young miss that a palace eunuch came to her and gave her the letter without revealing who was his master.
Just as the maid continued to hesitate, she looked up in time to see a eunuch coming up to the side of the royal offsprings' seats and whispered to one of the princes.
She pointed at the direction of the eunuch and said to her young miss, "That's him, my lady."
Song Lin followed her where her finger was pointed at and saw a eunuch standing beside the Fourth Prince, Yu Fangzhu, and was speaking to him about something.
Shocked at this discovery, she scolded the maid, "What is this lowly maid saying?! How can you mistook that eunuch for someone else."
"But I'm not lying, my lady!" Cried the maid, "It was really him!"
"Hush now. Forget what you heard and have seen." Song Lin reprimanded the maid. She didn't want to believe what the maid was saying. She thought that there might be someone else who sent this letter to her to trick her.
And just in time, Yu Fangzhu raised his eyes after the eunuch was done speaking to him. As if a stroke of luck struck Song Lin, their eyes met and she saw him nodding his head at her.
Somehow, when Yu Fangzhu continued to listen to the eunuch's report regarding the matters of the cave, he felt a stare falling on to his figure and looked over. His eyes met the eyes of a young lady who looked adequate enough to be called a noble lady.
Having met her eyes, Yu Fangzhu couldn't ignore it and thus, he nodded his head to her as a greeting and nothing more, before turning to look at the eunuch.
After meeting his eyes, Song Lin bashfully nodded her head at him and looked down. Her heartbeat quickened as a red tint colored her cheeks and ears.
How can this be? Is this true? She thought to herself as she couldn't believe that the prince that she fancied would invite her to meet up in the palace where many could see them if an error would be made.
However, even though she was initially doubting the origin of the letter but when she saw Yu Fangzhu nodding his head after listening to the eunuch, Song Lin's mind was muddled with the thought that her life's biggest desire could finally be realized and that the man in her heart has fallen for her.
With these thoughts, Song Lin clenched her hand tighter around the letter.
If this was a trick meant to fool her, she swore she would kill that vicious person and destroy them, letting them know that it was a mistake to make a fool out of her.
But if the fourth prince really did send this to her…
Was Song Lin willing to not take this opportunity that could only happen in her dreams?
Her parents have been rushing to find an eligible bachelor for her to marry and her relatives were comparing her to the concubine that their Song family produced, making her look like a fool. Thinking about the scorn and mocking eyes that the concubine used to look at her, Song Lin wanted to know what kind of expression the concubine and her family will show when they found out that she was invited out to meet by Yu Fangzhu.
With a determined look on her face, the smile on her face widened.
"Young miss… should I tell the master and madam about this?" The maid cautiously asked.
Glaring at the maid, Song Lin warned her, "Do not utter a word to my father or mother. If I hear something from them… Make sure you're prepared for a beating."
Song Lin didn't want her parents to know of this matter. If they really did catch wind of this, who knew if they would stop her and block her way in becoming the fourth prince's consort? And if she wasn't destined to be his consort, being his concubine also doesn't sound so bad.
The maid shuddered, knowing that Song Lin loves to punish her servants for entertainment and if a servant makes a mistake, the punishment was beyond horrible.
Touching the cold and smooth texture of the gold ingots that she received from the beautiful young lady seated across them, the maid was resolute to finish this task. With the gold she received, she will be gone long before her young miss could find her and punish her.
As a maid who never got outside of the Song residence, she naturally didn't know what the rumored Fourth young miss in the Lin family looked like even though she heard stories about her. Hence, she assumed that the young miss across them was only a part of the Lin family.
Raising her eyes to look at the young miss across them, the maid slightly nodded her head at her to tell her that the task was done.
Lin Xiaofei only swept her a glance before smiling indifferently. Her eyes fell on the honored seats, at the man that also had his eyes on her.
Seeing the playful tint in his eyes, Lin Xiaofei expected that he might be enjoying the show that she devised and became somehow annoyed. She took her eyes off of him and looked at the petal floating in her tea.
She didn't like the fact that her plan was seen through by Qu Xing Xu but she couldn't complain about it when they decided to form an alliance
In any case, she was glad that the maid did her task successfully.
Staring at the delighted and bashful Song Lin, Lin Xiaofei couldn't wait to see what kind of faces will the Song family wear when they see their daughter falling in the hands of the wrong person?
Don't blame me for being this ruthless… She thought to herself. If only the Song family minded their own business and did not fuss over her marriage, she wouldn't have done this method that was overused by many in the entire Capital.
Qu Xing Xu was still watching the young female who formed an alliance with him with interest. The corners of his mouth couldn't help but lift more as he thought of the drama she's planning that will entertain him more.
Remembering how her eyes dangerously lit up when he mentioned that she was up against the royal family, his hands couldn't help but feel the excitement course through it.
