Chapter 439 - 439: Not Doing Anything Wrong
Chapter 439 – 439: Not Doing Anything Wrong
That was when she heard it- the faint sound of screams coming from the path leading to the alpha's house. Her eyes widened in shock. The first thing that came to her mind was the children. Without thinking too much about the consequences Luna took off towards the direction, reeling in every bit of speed that her body could offer her.
What awaited her was not a pretty sight. Blood was splattered throughout the road, dripping down the leaves of the low branches of the undergrowth. Thankfully she didn't come across any bodies- yet. The sounds were much closer now. Luna slipped into the forest cover, keeping at her path.
A wolf flashed in front of her, running for its life as another one flashed right behind it, ignoring her existence. The goddess sighed, not bothering to cover her body with a spell. She knew that it would be too much waste of magic- just in case that she'd need it for self-defense. Her path was now starting to show littered limbs and organs of half-morphed werewolves.
She overstepped the carnage, steadily making her way towards the first row of houses. She didn't know what was happening on the Island, but she was determined to save the innocent. The rest was not her burden, she thought, stepping into the first hut.
The small mud-house looked dark and empty, bereft of the sleeping children who were supposed to be on the bed. With a frown, she stepped into the second hut. But like the first one, this building also looked deserted with no apparent signs of struggle. The next few houses were of the same condition.
Just as she was stepping out from the last one, she felt a sudden pulse of heat on her chest. Luna raised her brows, grabbing slowly heating the destiny stone in her hands. It was starting to give off a dull blue glow. Her eyes widened at the sight. She looked around the dark canopy surrounding her, only for the stone to turn dead cold the next minute.
"Am I imagining things?" She wondered aloud, staring into the direction of the wide forest path that was now filled with a frenzy of fighting wolves.
But she couldn't find him among them. With a frown, she stepped out of the hut, dismissing the occurrence as triggered by her fantasies. After searching around for a while, it was by the alpha's house that she finally found the children.
They were hiding behind the bushes- almost two dozen of them, shivering with fright as they tried to keep the really young ones quiet. They were perfectly hidden from the view of the fighting wolves. Luna let out a sigh of relief, seeing that none of them were injured.
"Hey." She called, coming to stand right behind the group.
The startled children jumped, coming out of their hiding places in shock. Before she could even let out another word, one of the eldest of the lot stepped forward, her hand spread to her sides in defense.
"It's you! Please!" The girl exclaimed, her eyes wide with fright. "Don't kill us!"
Luna rolled her eyes at the comment. It seems that the adults had already fed the small ones with fantastical tales. No wonder that they always hid behind the trees whenever she passed by them, she thought, shaking her head.
"I won't." The goddess said with a smile. "Why don't you go inside? It will be safer in there." She asked, pointing towards the alpha's residence.
The children looked at each other in confusion, glancing at her suspiciously as they murmured amongst themselves. Luna kept a lookout for stray wolves as they did. She didn't want to force them, but time was running out. She still had someone else to find after sending them to a safe place, she thought to herself.
Finally, the girl who spoke up earlier cleared her throat, stepping towards the goddess unsurely. "But the alpha doesn't like it when others trespass his property." She said nervously.
Luna waved her hand at the girl dismissively. "He won't touch you." She said, with a wink. "Don't worry."
Soon the children poured into the spacious hut one by one, trying their best to move as quietly as possible. Once they were all inside, she put a thin film of a silencing spell around the house. The oldest girl watched her with awe as she did. Her mouth was still hanging open when the goddess stepped inside, closing the door behind her.
"You can close that now," Luna said, sidestepping the girl to walk into the bedroom.
The girl blushed, embarrassed by her actions. "You're actually nice." She said, following her like a tail. "I'm Judy, by the way."
"Sure." The goddess said, taking a seat by the crowded bed.
The children had quickly made themselves comfortable, with the little ones already underneath the alpha's blanket, staring at her with their gazes filled with awe. She patted their little heads, only to be rewarded with shy sleepy smiles. Luna chuckled, turning back to the girl who had introduced herself as Judy.
"Who woke you up?" She asked, raising her brows.
"It was a handsome man with green eyes," Judy replied shyly. "He asked us to wait in the bushes outside and not come out till he comes to get us."
"What?" The goddess asked, her eyes growing wide as a pair of green eyes flashed in her mind.
Was it really him, then? She thought, getting up from the bed. Her heartbeat skyrocketed at the thought of her beloved, a smile slipping through her lips uncontrollably.
"Where did he go?" She asked, stepping towards the girl in excitement.
"I don't know," Judy replied, stepping back in fear. "Are we all going to die?" She asked, the question slipping out of her mouth as a distant scream reached the house.
The goddess shook her head. "You're going to be safe." She said, patting the girl's shoulder reassuringly. "They cannot hear you from out there."
'Master, we can't interfere in their fate.' The Tohar Sehlah's warning echoed in her head.
"I don't see the shadow of death on any of them," Luna murmured, glancing over at the lot of radiant souls. "So I'm not doing anything wrong." She said, smiling from ear to ear.
She wasn't doing anything huge. They would have been safe anyhow. By keeping them inside, she was only making sure that they wouldn't be emotionally scarred by the carnage outside, she thought, dismissing the stone's worries with a flick of her hair.
In a world that was fast getting overcome by darkness, she wasn't going to let it taint these innocent souls to the slightest, at least not under her watch. She was going to have to spend more magic tonight than she thought she would, but it was okay. She still had enough to take the soul shard and move on to the next timeline.
Giving Judy an encouraging push towards her friends, the goddess stepped back, her hand hovering over her chest.
The Tohar Sehlah was hesitant. 'But-'
"It's going to be okay." She said, her voice rising as she addressed the children. Bright white sparks danced at the tip of her fingers as she raised her hand. "When you wake up in the morning, everything is going to be alright."
