Chapter 444 – 444: Eavesdropping Is Not A Good Habit
The goddess winced at the accusation. So that's what they thought about her now. Being called a witch wasn't so bad, but such an identity would probably cost her her life on this island, she thought, frowning at the image that flashed in her mind. Though she was immortal, such an incident could possibly push her plans back a few inches once again.
"Guard your tongue, Vera!" The alpha's voice rose, his hands clenching into fists in anger.
The darkness that surrounded him blazed high like a wildfire, making him appear like a wild animal set on tearing everything in his path apart with his bare hands. Luna covered her mouth with her hands, trying to suppress a gasp. She had never seen it like that before.
It was a terrifying sight to those who could see. She didn't need to second guess the fact that fate was trying to push his destiny towards him more urgently as if trying to correct itself from the deviated path. She pitied the man but knew that there was little that she could do for him without tipping the balance of the universe.
Her presence in his life had already affected him more than it should have. To the point that on the last day that he had come to tease her before the ceremony, she could see that the darkness surrounding him was slowly dissipating. And now, it had come back with a much intense force, pushing the inevitable at the man.
"No, I won't!" Vera's voice cut through the silence of the night. "She's the one who let their leader escape! The rest of those rogues vanished before we could get our hands on them. How could you still protect her like this?! She's a spy, Willaim!" The woman screamed, the veins on her forehead popping out with the strain.
"Shut up, Vera!" William screamed, his voice turning animalistic. Before he knew it, his hands were already wrapped around the woman's pale thin neck, raising her above the ground in a death grip as he growled, "Just shut up!"
Vera's eyes bulged in shock. She struggled, unable to pull herself loose from his grip. Blood rushed to her face as his fingers tightened. "Will- what- are-you-" She huffed, barely able to get her words out.
The alpha roared, the sound shaking the forest. Vera trembled in fear as she tapped on his hands frantically, desperate to break free. Without the slightest hesitation, William pushed her to the side, throwing her against the nearest tree.
Vera's body hit the huge trunk with a thud, followed by a crack. She yelped in agony, twisting her bent back with shaky fingers. Tears rolled down the woman's face as she struggled to keep herself from screaming out loud.
"So it's really you this time," Luna whispered, watching the she-wolf's healing mechanism kick in.
It seemed to work painfully slowly and Luna knew the reason why. Though William in his anger might not have noticed it, Vera's chest was rising and falling with an erratic rhythm. She pitied the she-wolf. Her trust always seemed to have been placed in the wrong people. She wondered if the woman realized that.
"Stay away from her," William said, raising a shaky finger at the pitiable creature.
Vera raised her head, looking at the man with an array of emotions. "You don't even know her name." She said, getting up from the ground with the support of the tree trunk. Taking one last glance at the alpha, she turned away, her head lowered as she said, "It's okay. I know what to do."
In the next moment, she disappeared, flashing out of the place in the snap of a finger. William's hands clenched into fists as he kept staring at the direction she went towards with an irritated expression. There was no regret in his eyes, only disappointment and something that looked like a mixture of guilt and longing.
Luna sighed, stepping away from the door. She knew that it was not safe to stay there anymore. William was well on his way inside when Vera had stopped him. She quickly turned towards the bedroom in panic. Just as she slid into the bed, the door opened.
"Eavesdropping is not a good habit." William's voice echoed through the hall, reaching her as she hurried to bury herself under the blanket.
She cursed under her breath, closing her eyes shut. She didn't want to acknowledge her crime or have a conversation about how he had caught her helping the enemy escape. She prayed that his foul mood would lead him out of the room at the same pace that he had come in.
But it seemed like luck was not on her side tonight. Luna bit her lips at the thud of his boots being thrown aside. As his footsteps drew near, her fingers clenched the blanket tight against herself. The knowledge that the man was carrying her in his heart sickened her. She didn't want him anywhere near her.
The mattress sank as he climbed over it. "Why? Why are you pushing my limits like this?" He asked, reaching out to put a hand over the blanket unsurely. "Can't you just be by my side? I promise to keep you happy."
Luna rolled her eyes, trying her best to keep the snarky remarks that were standing at the tip of her tongue. His hand was hovering over her shoulder and she wanted it gone. She kept quiet, knowing that it was in her best interests to feign sleep.
"I don't know what happened between you and Liam." The alpha said, his voice growing heavy with emotions. "But forget him, for your own good. Only I can protect you." He whispered, his body suddenly all too close to her.
Luna raised her brows. Liam? Was that what the shard's name was? She thought, her heart skipping as the image of the green-eyed man flashed in her mind. But the goddess grew stiff as the alpha wrapped his hand around her waist and pulled her to him, holding her from above the blanket as he nestled her wrapped self into his chest. She didn't dare move in the fear of provoking any more actions from his side.
Luna lay awake as his arms remained tightly wrapped around her, uncomfortable with every passing moment. Soon, she found him asleep, his breaths longer than usual. It was only then that she dared to pull her head out of the blanket. As his arms slackened, she slid away slowly, careful not to wake the sleeping wolf.
Propping a pillow up between the two of them, the goddess yawned, surprisingly tired even after a whole day's nap.. Pushing herself as far against the wall as possible, she closed her eyes, giving in to the sick feeling that was fast taking over her entire being.
