Chapter 463 - 463: She Can Handle
Chapter 463 – 463: She Can Handle
The goddess lay back against the bed, exhausted and thoughtful. Her mind was a place of chaos after what she had heard from the she-wolf. The soft glow of the moonlight streamed into the room and against the gray of her eyes, laying warm against her soft features that were wrought with worry. Vera's voice echoed in her head.
"I swear that I'm telling the truth." The girl said, glaring at her begrudgingly. "The Island was a mess after you left, and so was William, all thanks to you."
Luna ignored the tone of the girl. She was a captive even though a compliant one. Besides, it was not like they were ever on good terms. She leaned forward, narrowing her eyes at the she-wolf.
"So you want me to believe that Circe let you go just like that after stealing her blood?" The goddess asked, resting her hands on the arms of the wooden chair.
Vera let out a low growl, displeased at her question. Liam stepped forward angrily, glaring at the girl in a threat. But seeing that she was unfazed by the wolf's threat, the alpha stopped right behind her chair, resting his hand on Luna's shoulder reassuringly.
The gesture didn't go unnoticed by the she-wolf who immediately retreated her fangs, suppressing her anger as she gave her explanation.
"I didn't steal it. She gave it to me." Vera paused, clenching her teeth as she lowered her eyes. Her voice was thick with regret as she continued, "We had a deal. I promised never to come back. All she ever wanted from the beginning was William's affection. I should have seen it back then."
Two neat trails of tears slipped quietly from her lowered head as she stopped, making the goddess frown. The story wasn't convincing enough, yet her emotions seemed to tell the truth. But she wasn't ready to give in to the story yet. Luna knew better than that.
"And you left without any complaints? That's unlike you." She said, tilting her head sideways in question. "I remember how feisty you were with your warning, claiming the man to be yours. Why would you then give up if you have such deep feelings for him?" She asked, raising her brows at the girl.
Vera huffed, rubbing her cheeks with the back of her hand. "You should know. Everything changed after you arrived.
Somehow you managed to grab his heart and take it with you. He never once turned towards me with the affection that I saw in his eyes as he was looking at you. You destroyed him." She said, raising her eyes to glare daggers at her.
Luna stared at her blankly, the least bothered by the look in her eyes.
The she-wolf continued, "You shouldn't have left if you were to leave him like that. There is something dark inside him that's growing day by day. It changed him more than I wanted to accept. And then one day it happened." Vera paused, her voice faltering as her eyes brimmed with tears yet again. "Circe revealed herself and promised him power beyond his imagination. She promised him the ability to have whatever he chose to keep as his. You. Destroyed. Him."
The goddess gritted her teeth, a sense of guilt overpowering her emotions from the weight of the accusation. That couldn't possible, now could it? She was an anomaly in the timeline. She had left before any real damage could happen to the timeline. It was William himself who had asked her to leave that day.
Did I stay too long with him? Had she really destroyed the man? Could it be that she would become the reason for the fate that haunted every Chosen One birth after birth? She wondered, her heart growing heavy with grief. Luna shook her head.
No. This was not the time to think of such things. She was not the one under question. It was the she-wolf, the goddess reminded herself. Taking a deep breath, she sat back.
"Liam. How do you know him?" She asked, pointing towards the alpha.
The she-wolf's tears dried, replaced with a look of exhaustion that weighed down her eyelids.
She began, "If you didn't know, it was not always like this. There was a time that William, Liam, Isaac, Alicia and I were close. And now they don't even recognize me." Vera huffed, glancing between Isaac and his alpha in accusation. With her eyes fixed on the latter, she continued, "If not for Alicia's tricks I would have been engaged to Liam by now."
Feeling his grip tightening on the chair hardly a hair length from the nape of her neck, Luna turned towards Liam. Every muscle on his body was taut with tension, his jaws clenched, as he stared at his fist in irritation. The goddess cleared her throat, glancing between the alpha and his beta.
"Can you two please step out?" She asked, raising her brows.
Isaac turned to her with a concerned look. "But-"
"She can handle her," Liam said, interrupting his friend. Nodding at her in acknowledgment, he turned towards the door. "Let's go."
The two stepped out of the room quietly, leaving the women all alone in the light of the dull lanterns. As soon as the doors shut close, the goddess turned towards the she-wolf, noticing the way her eyes were fixed at the exit, a look of disappointment painted all over her face.
"So, Alicia," She asked, drawing her attention back towards her. "How close were you to her?"
Vera turned towards her, her posture a bit more relaxed. She put a hand behind her neck, pressing on her muscles in exhaustion as she replied.
"Enough to know that she would do whatever it takes to get Liam." She said, looking at her pointedly. "I remember introducing Circe to her. It was our little secret. Just us three, sneaking out at night and running free in the forest."
The she-wolf paused, a slight smile spreading across her features as she lost herself in the memory. But it didn't last long. The wrinkle at the edge of her eyes straightened as they took on a miserable expression.
She continued, "Everything changed after the riot. We had to leave Wolfbreak and everything we knew since our childhood." Vera frowned, looking at her in confusion.. "But why are you asking about her?" She asked, looking clueless.
